The Black Boerboel

The black Boerboel can be a very controversial dog depending on whom you ask.

As Aisha Boerboels are soon to be expecting another litter of black Boerboel puppies, we thought it a good idea to briefly explain the history a little. This is only a basic explanation and not a genetic or historical breakdown.

Some believe that the black Boerboel is not a historical representation of the breed whilst other argue the exact opposite, that the black Boerboel was always part of the breed.

The black Boerboel was previously recognised by SABBS and then removed from the acceptable breed standard. Upon appeal, it was reinstated and is again now recognised by SABBS,

Given the genetic makeup of the modern Boerboel from its ancestral foundations, it is highly probable that the black gene has always been present.

Some breed purists believe that some examples of black Boerboels have not been of notable quality. This is difficult to quantify. Any example of a Boerboel can be of high or not so high quality regardless of coat colour. Therefore each animal, within the breed standard, should be judged on its individual merits and benefit to the breed.

This is precisely what the Boerboel appraisal system was designed to do. To judge an individual animal based on the breed standard.

Arguably, there are good an bad examples of Boerboels regardless of coat colour.

Here are a few of the common questions we are asked about the black Boerboel

Will SABBS carry out an appraisal on a black Boerboel?
Yes. Now that the black Boerboel is again recognised by SABBS, a black Boerboel can have a SABBS appraisal on equal terms to other breed standard Boerboels.

Can a black Boerboel enter a SABBS show?
Yes. Now that the black Boerboel is again recognised by SABBS, a black Boerboel can enter and potentially win a SABBS show.

Can a SABBS registered breeder breed black Boerboels?
Yes. This is acceptable within the SABBS breed standard and SABBS constitution.

Is a black Boerboel a better or worse example of the Boerboel breed standard?
As the black Boerboel is again now recognised within the SABBS breed standard, how closely the individual dog conforms to that breed standard is what the dog would be appraised to. Therefore it would be an appraisal score of an individual dog that would indicate a better example of the Boerboel breed standard.

Is a black Boerboel a purebred Boerboel?
Yes. It is a historical fact that the original and historic ancestors of the modern Boerboel did include black dogs and dogs that carry the black gene. What determines if a particular dog is purebred or not is its lineage. A purebred dog can easily be identified by its ancestral pedigree.

Does a black Boerboel mean that another breed was used to provide the black gene?
No. It is a historical fact that the original and historic ancestors of the modern Boerboel did include black dogs and dogs that carry the black gene.

Will a black Boerboel be larger / smaller than other colour of Boerboel?
The coat colour of the individual dog will not influence the size of the dog. It is the dogs genetic ancestry that ultimately determine its size along with diet.

Is the black Boerboel common in the UK?
No. The Boerboel breed is in general still very uncommon in the UK. The Boerboel is very much an emerging breed. By virtue of the breed itself being uncommon, the black Boerboel is still quite rare in the UK.
